Finger Printing

Yes, I know this may sound like an odd idea for a neobook project, but has anyone ever tinkered in the realm of finger printing and finger print scanning?

For a project I'm currently working on, it would be awesome if we had the ability to allow users to identify themselves using a fingerprint, but I was wondering how this is done. Is it pretty much like the old barcode wedge scanner methods, where the scanner acts like an input device? Or is it a little more complex than that?

The only knowledge I've actually got in this whole area is that in a few applications I've seen, I've been told the actual fingerprint information is stored as numbers (points on the finger print) instead of an actual fingerprint, and so was wondering if this's be a possibility.

Anyway, back to my question, has anyone ever tried anything like this? I'm going to just assume that you'd need a custom plugin to do this.
Even better, does anyone have any idea how I'd actually go about doing something like this?

Now, next part of the project, the plugins. How exactly would you go about developing a plugin from, for example, the Neurotechnologija VeriFinger SDK? It says the package contains "a set of COM/ActiveX components", and am wondering is it easy to turn that into a plugin? Is there anywhere I can go to pay to have a plugin made for it?

I'm looking into this same topic, does anyone know if its possible to capture fingerprints, cards, signatures or anything using external hardware that wouldnt need an specific (or too specific) plugin?, anything that can be accomplished by some of the current mainstream Neobook plugins?

Once I came across hardware like this, and guess what - SDK was not free, you have to buy it separately (or as a bundle) and it's price was like 250$ or so )
