On the hardware side its like arduino and raspberry, nice and versatile, but if you want reliable hardware for controlling e.g. relay output and pulse counting, and if you want some protection against emp on long lines I fear better buffering is required.
But for someone at ease with javascript and building hardware its a very nice small development
