Quale futuro per NeoBook?

Post by dgpixel »

We're looking into mobile options. However, there are many important aspects of NeoBook (like plug-ins) that simply will not translate to a mobile platform. There is also the problem of compatibility between the many different mobile platforms. Apple, Android, Windows RT, etc. are all incompatible with each other and will require their own compilers. For these reasons a mobile NeoBook app would probably be quite different than a Windows NeoBook app. It would be nice to be able to wave a magic wand and have compiler options for everything, but as a small company that's probably not a realistic option for us. We are exploring mobile options, but we can't make any promises right now. If you need to develop mobile apps immediately, then sadly you will need to use a different tool.

Many of us are thinking about this and I know Neosoftware is working on a Version 6 of NB that will have new capacities but the world of mobile is fully upon us and I too wonder what is the best way to use our existing NB skill to develop Mobile Apps.

Here is something I have been thinking of as a concept of where Neobook could go: Create HTML 5 from the core elements of the NB IDE and find a way to convert NB script into JavaScript.

For example, in NB we have objects we can put on a page: Buttons, Articles, Linked Articles, Image Files, Polygon, Rectangle, Elipse/Circle, Line, Text input, ComboBox, Listbox, Checkbox, Radio button, Webbrowser object, Timer, Track bar, Media player, Animated Gif, Flash, Container.

In HTML you can create buttons, articles, insert image files, input fields, dropdowns (& listbox - same), checkboxes, radio buttons, etc.

The appearance of most of these can be styled with CSS. Core graphics (rectangles, elipses, lines, etc.) can be made in vector forms in HTML5. Polygons could be defined by the HTML mapping tag. we can insert additional browser objects into an existing html page using HTML5 iFrame tags. Also the browser now has native support of many video/audio formats.

Things like timers could be written in javascript. Many/most of the action scripts in NB have equivalent items in JavaScript. I am not saying this would be a simple thing to convert NB actionscripts to JavaScript, but it is an upgrade many would pay for if it helped them make HTML5 applications.

My point is this: I think someone (Neosoftware itself or an enterprising coder) could take the text based NB file and convert much of it to HTML5. Of course, no plugins would work and some NB code wouldn't work for sure as HTML/javascript is largely isolated from the file system. Also the context of these web based objects with regard to mouse position and which button is clicked, etc would have to have some very good javascript code behind the scenes.

If this were the direction taken for version 6 then our skill sets will be truly useful in the era of mobile devices/html5!
