NeoBook 5.6.1 Update Redux

Post by Neosoft Support »

NeoSoft Corp. has released a second build of NeoBook version 5.6.1.

NOTE: If you registered NeoBook 5 before February 1st 2008 then you will need to purchase a new registration code in order to use version 5.6 or higher. If you purchased NeoBook 5 after February 1st 2008, then this upgrade is free. Registered users of NeoBook 5.0 through 5.5.4 can purchase a new registration code for $25.

The version 5.6.1 upgrade patch (second build - 18 September) can be downloaded from the following website:

http://www.neosoftware.com/patch.html

Follow the instructions to download and apply the update patch.

This update contains the following:

Fixes

- Corrected a problem that prevented page tabs from being dragged when a publication contained more page tabs than would fit along the bottom of NeoBook’s screen.

- The tab key can now be used to navigate between text entry fields in publications compiled as web browser plug-ins. Previously, Internet Explorer would intercept tab keys and removing the input focus from the publication.

Additional information abouth the 5.6.1 update can be found in the original announcement below:

Downloaded the patch. However now Neobook just crashes and doesn't even get to it's main window. Using Windows Vista Business SP1 32-bit. I'm going to try an uninstall and reinstall using the trial download from the site.

Result - It still doesn't run! Need help as 5.6 worked just fine...5.6.1 is well..toast. I need to program. Where can I download an older version?

Thanks.

Timothy,

We haven't had any other reports of problems with v5.6.1. There are no known problems with Vista. I can arrange to send you the 5.6 update if necessary, but I suspect that the problem lies elsewhere. First, try this:

1. Run the Windows registry editor (Regedit.exe).

2. Highlight and delete the following section:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\NeoSoft\NeoBook 5\PlugIns

3. Run NeoBook.

Deleted the plugins registry keys and NeoBook still will not run.

Any other thoughts?

UPDATE: It now works. I had to add NeoBook.exe into the exception list for data execution prevention.

I'm glad that you figured this out. Ironically, the Windows DEP (data execution prevention) feature doesn't like the software we use to protect NeoBook from hackers. DEP has no problem with compiled pubs, just NeoBook.exe. Fortunately, in most cases the default DEP setting is off. Hopefully, the company that makes our protection software can provide us with a fix for this problem.

From what I understand about the problem you were experiencing is that its caused by a buggy plug-in attempting to overwrite memory that doesn't belong to it. Most likely this problem is still there but with the new build the memory being overwritten is less critical. Until you fix the plug-in the problem may show up again in the future.

Timothy's post made me curious how you add programs to the exception list in Vista. A quick google turned up the following:

To add a program to the DEP Exception List
1.) Open "Control Panel"
2.) Click on "System and Maintenance"
3.) Click on "System"
4.) On the left side click on "Advanced System Settings"
you will be asked for permission to continue, click continue
5.) Click on the Advanced tab and then on "Settings" in the Performance area
6.) Click on the DEP (Data Execution Prevention) tab
7.) Put a tick in the little circle next to "Turn on DEP for all programs and services
except those I select" and click on the "ADD" button and
browse for and click on the .exe file for DVDFab or
any other App then click "Open" now click "Apply" then "OK"
and close all open windows and your done.

Maybe some of our Vista users will find it helpful.

Hi Dave,

I had installed the Neo 5.6.1 Spanish version you send me.

I had installed it at new folder, in order to preserve Neo 5.5.4

It works fine... on my WXP SP2 machine, as demo program.

I had checked Neo 5.5.4 at the same time, and I discovered that the registration key was erased. I had need re register Neo 5.5.4

A few minutes afters, I uninstalled Neo 5.6.1.

The uninstall program deleted all Neo 5.6.1 AND Neo 5.5.4.

I had need reinstall Neo 5.5.4 again.

Please, could you check this ?

Thanks in advance,

It's not recommended that you attempt to install both v5.5.4 and v5.6+ at the same time. These versions are both considered to be the same application. You should install one or the other, but not both.
