Windows 8

Post by dpayer »

I have been very frustrated with Windows 8 and wasn't sure if it was just me getting old and cranky or was I part of a general rebellion against Microsoft that was brewing.

Well....... I realize now I have joined the revolution. Windows 8 is certifiably confusing. Many others think so as well.

See this animated intro to Windows 8: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTYet-qf1jo

I can verify that Microsoft has created something that is not focused on productivity but on viewing content. I do not see how Windows 8 will be embraced by enterprise level operations. It will be too expensive and time consuming to train people to see how to use it.

For those who have already 'bit the bullet' and installed Windows 8 on your system I have a utility you may find useful: 'Classic Shell' http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/

With this tool, you can add a START BUTTON. Yes folks, Win8 does not have a start button any more or menus you will recognize. That is a big part of the confusion. This tool helps alot to give your 'new' system an XP menu system you can relate to.

I am still keeping my eyes open to more tips/tricks type of websites. Interacting with Windows 8 is like learning DOS all over again, having never used a computer.

Hello David,

The nice shell we had 2 posts below. ;-)
http://neosoftware.com/community/viewto ... 10&t=19688

My wife's new netbook (Asus Vivobook) is a Win8 touch laptop.
Currently the metro gui is a diffenrent kind of startmenu for me.
Our neobook apps ran as windows legacy apps like before.

Not sure how serious enterprise software will make sense in metro style.

Regards

Thanks Hans Peter for the reminder of the earlier posts. I had not yet installed Windows8 when that was written. I guess it was inconceivable before installing the new OS that the user interface would be changed so greatly. I had no place to put your information at that time. :)

This 'Classic Shell' is a big help for me. I now feel the need to help others get over their windows confusion. lol
